Servando Cabrera Moreno

Servando Cabrera Moreno (Havana, 1923-1981), a poet of convoluted eros, of a severe brushwork, of suggestive transparencies and imperishable line in the drawing, reaches the peak of his work in the erotic cycle that taking place in the 70’s. Evading social taboos and conservative positions belonging to the most orthodox deliberations, Cabrera Moreno endures the lacerating censorship throughout his career in the midst of political ideological storms that had in the so-called “Gray Quinquennium” or “Black Decade” its strongest roots. In 1971 he was denied the right to exhibit his work in the National Museum of Fine Arts and from then on, the doors of national exhibition spaces were closed, including those that once had served as a space for promotion and exhibition of his epic painting series. Although his creative will did not stop, it took time for him comeback once again into the art scene of the moment. Hence, in the shadows of confinement, the artist granted total freedom to imagination and carnal human instinct to conform his singular unions of male bodies –certainly, unintelligible at times–, kisses, sexes, copulations, group coitus and pleasant rest. Also, his wide and immeasurable vision, make him look around and become an aesthetic lover of the female figure. That is why in a broader analysis, his work forces us to catalog him as one of the great masters in the study of the body and the human figure; marking aesthetic imprints along side and a sublime humanism in each of his canvases.
