Polysemous or Univocal?
Art, from the ambiguity of metaphor and charm of visual poetry, is able to transform man, subverting schemes, break conventions. Art is always origin of wisdoms when it can overcome barriers of the pure aesthetic delight. However, it is better when it is mixed the sublimity of the image created with the semantic contributions. Justly, when both areas do go hand-to-hand, we can say that has built a true artistic monument. This is the case of Punto de vista (Point of view), an Iván Capote’s work that combines conceptual richness, tropological value, aesthetics lavishness…
This time, the master of Cuban neoconceptualism has been stripped of letters, words and figurations to build an image that presupposes the game of representation through the search for a sign, the American dollar. It is a complex discovery, not everybody can make it, because it requires a patient and curious spectator, capable of carefully stopping in front of the work, going around, studying it and then finding the last meaning. To challenge the public and immerse it in the interstices of the symbolic figure sketched and then provide it interpretive dissimilar routes has been the purpose of the eldest of Capote brothers using anamorphosis as visual resource.
It is a work made of iron rods inserted in a wooden base that can be observed from different angles, but its meaning can be understood only from one side. Once discovered the mystery, the fragments joint and in front of the univocal image, the supposed polysemy appears. Reflections about money and its uses, market adversities, superficiality and banality of man to the excessive ambitions are some of the thoughts that Punto de vista discerns. The sense of balance, the visual use of shadows, the old inquisitions about the circular time are reflected in this work that moves through the sculptural-installative, among frames of the artistic object.
Using great poetic-philosophical breath, Iván Capote takes us from the sign to the idea, and from this one towards the uncountable symbolic contributions built by each viewer. The apparent silence and the complexity of the image to the disturbing meaning and the disturbing reflection. Punto de vista is undoubtedly the best and boldest artistic production of Iván’s, not in vain has been part of some of his most personal renowned exhibitions such as Aforismos (Aphorisms) and get privileged positions into group exhibitions of international importance, for instance Cuba, Contemporary Art.
