Manuel MendiveUntitled, 1982
Oil on heavy cardboard, 34.5 x 38.5 cm.
This 1982 painting is an excellent example of the style that distinguishes Manuel Mendive within the universe of contemporary Cuban art. Dense vegetation and fauna, leafy trees, birds and fishes, some of them having humanoid faces. Imaginary beings camouflage in nature; strange deities of earth, skies and waters. A large river flows by a hill. It is the synthesis of nature’s pure rumor, of life’s mythical hidden powers. It is insular culture’s poetry, the delight in its African essence and its tropical intense colors.
